After Meredith admired her newly organized closet, she got extra towels from the hall closet and they both showered. Now they stood by Meredith’s bed and she felt the exhaustion of the day, mixed with the warmth from her shower, drain the last of her energy.

“Come on, let’s cuddle.” Pulling back the covers, Jack used his magic to remove their clothing, leaving her in just her bra and panties and him in his boxer briefs.

“Ah, Jack,” she said, looking down at herself and then at him, “warn a girl next time, okay?”

“Right, sorry.” Placing her on the bed, he crawled in beside her and pulled up the blankets, covering them both. They snuggled with her front flush against his, her head cradled on his arm and shoulder. She relished the feeling of being wrapped in Jack’s arms, until the happenings of the morning started running like a movie reel through her mind. She shivered at the memory of Reece lying on the ground, looking completely lifeless.

She turned in Jack’s arms and laid on her back so she could see his eyes. “I keep hoping I’m going to wake up and it will all have been a bad dream, that no one wanted to do us harm and no one was injured, but then my mom’s life would still be in danger.”

“Unfortunately, there is true evil in the world, and your mothers did what they thought was best to protect you. And except for not going through with the unbinding, which wasn’t an option, we couldn’t have prevented today’s attack. It wasn’t anything we could control and we had no hint that it was going to happen.”

Meredith didn’t respond, just let Jack hold her. She soaked in the feeling of Jack’s caress as he ran his hand softly along her arm, shoulder, and back.

After several minutes, he gently pulled his arm out from underneath her, and hoisted himself up on one forearm and stared into her eyes. “It’s just you and me. That’s all we have to think about right now.” He continued to hold her gaze and lowered his lips to hers. It was a gentle kiss. A kiss meant to reassure and coax away the worry, at least for now. She opened to him and his tongue tangled with hers. They nipped and sucked each other’s tongue and lips, like they had all the time in the world. It was a slow dance of affection, but far too soon he pulled his mouth from hers. She wanted more. “Kiss me, Jack.”

“I want to, but if I keep kissing you, I might not be able to stop.”

“Then don’t.”

“Bubbles, we’re reeling from everything that happened this morning. I don’t think this should be the first time we make love. I don’t want you to have regrets.”

“I won’t. I want to feel.”

He kissed her again, and it was everything she wanted. “You can stop this at any time.”

“I won’t.” She put her hand on the back of his neck and pulled him back to her.
